Inappropriate Behaviour Online
There has been surprisingly little inappropriate behaviour on the pilot sites SHMU has been running online.
We discussed potential issues at length before the launch of each pilot, and came up with a list of likely flashpoints which included the following:
- Online bullying
- Inappropriate comments (racially or sexually orientated)
- Uploading inappropriate material (adult / illegal / anti-social )
- Accessing inappropriate sites (anti-social or illegal behaviour / adult content)
- Breaching copyright laws
These discussions are important in setting clear boundaries and valuable in working with young people.
But throughout all the Incluso online activities there have been relatively few transgressions.
1. SHMUTRAIN: we found young males were accessing and watching dog-fighting videos online (dog-fighting is illegal in the UK and we stopped this activity whenever we discovered it)
2. SHMUTRAIN: some young people would adorn their profile pages with cannabis imagery or negative comments about the Police (we used this as a point of discussion and addressed each on its own merits)
3. SHMUTRAIN: young males swapped homophobic slang insults at one another - in a friendship way. (An opportunity for discussion)
4. SHMUTRAIN: young males accessing sites with offensive material (sexual content). (Told to cease and used as a discussion point)
This kind of activity was predicted and expected, but so far we have encountered only one instance of bullying behaviour.
In this example, the young person left a short comment suggesting a violent act towards another young person. The circumstances suggested this may not have been bullying behaviour, but an act of stupidity, directed at the young person's friend. This was dealt with through a disciplinary hearing, turned into a positive learning experience for all involved, and the comment was removed. The two young people are still friends.
This example did raise interesting issues about moderating content. We decided not to moderate comments since transgressions were so few and far between and moderations would be very time consuming.
