Cop College Trip Develops Communication Skills

A trip to the national police training college has given an Incluso team an opportunity to engage members of their Youth Radio Project (YRP) on a much deeper level.

Staff from SHMU in Aberdeen, came up with the idea after a visit to Scotland's police training facility at Tulliallan, near Stirling.

They have set up an online forum discussion to ask two questions:

  • After visiting the Tulliallan Police College how have your views about the police changed?
  • How could the relationship between a community and its Police Force be improved?

The forum is a feature in the Ning social networking site which the team developed as part of the Incluso project.

This is part of the second phase in the YRP Incluso pilot. The first phase involved the development of the Ning site, training for young people and staff, embedding the site into the YRP project workflow and experimentation with the features of the Ning application.

Sam Thom, Incluso coordinator at SHMU, said, "One of our objectives is to assess if young people's communication skills improve through the use of social software. Questions like these require the young people to give an opinion, but some of them find it  difficult to form sensible opinions."

He said that basing questions around a recent experience which was enjoyed in a group setting should make it easier for people to give more reflective answers.

It's hoped that this kind of activity will encourage the young people to become more articulate in the way they express their ideas and more sophisticated in the ideas they conjure up.
