Case 2: Opting for a social network
There are many tools out there which could be used for engaging with young people, but certain kinds are more suited than others. At SHMU in Aberdeen, Scotland, we find that most young people do not like writing and when they do write it is very short and usually in text-speak. So, we have avoided tools focused on writing, such as forums.
Instead, we looked at which tools they use most and opted for social networking sites. The good thing about these sites is that they offer many of the classic social media functions, such as photo and video upload, third party apps, commenting, chat etc, all in one place. So, rather than be limited by the functionality of a single-purpose application such as YouTube, a forum or MSN, we increase our opportunities to engage with young people inside one all-encompassing application – the social network site.
